After several years of work on it, we're aware of the limitations of the Arma engine and have some promising ideas on ways to work around them whilst maintaining a higher level of performance than both Vanilla DayZ and Epoch.

In addition to new features, we'll also be cleaning up the old code and - in a lot of places - re-writing it from scratch to emphasize modularity, configuration and efficiency. With that in mind, we'll be working with the mod creators (many of whom are on the team) to integrate these features, make them configurable, and offer modularity for new features to be added easily.
There are features considered a must-have on every server which have to be installed manually by server owners, adding to the complexity and size of mission files, as well as creating more opportunity for bugs and problems updating from one version to the next. From hardcore PVP survivalism to friendly PVE collaboration, DayZ Epoch has offered something for everyone ever since it was released. A lot of the vibrancy in the mod community comes from the unique spin server owners' and communities have given each server out there.

This will be an open and honest development process, taking feedback from the community to create a product which is free for everyone to use and modify to their hearts' content. Since DayZ Mod and all its derivatives are licensed under the DML-SA as per Bohemia Interactive's decree, and with the future of the Arma 2 playerbase in mind, a group of us have decided to fork Epoch at its current release (1.0.5.1) and continue development. However, the Epoch developers are currently busy with their new project for Arma 3. As the most popular DayZ Mod, Epoch has a lot of servers running today as well as a LOT of players.
